2014 - July meeting — Thursday, July 17

Topic: "Dancing with Wildflowers" 
Guest speaker: Miriam Goldberger, owner of Wildflower Farm

Speaker’s biography: Miriam is a well-known champion of native plants and has been a professional wildflower grower for over 25 years. She is the founder and visionary of Wildflower Farm, one of Canada’s oldest and largest wildflower seed companies, located near Coldwater, and is certified by Monarch Watch as a Monarch Waystation. Miriam’s mission is to encourage as many people as possible to grow, design, decorate, arrange, and love the flowers that have inspired her passion. Miriam’s passion for wildflower beauty and botany has been shared in many high-profile magazines and televised programs. Her recently published book, Taming Wildflowers, is the culmination of a 25-year love affair with wildflowers and native grasses. Miriam is a walking wildflower encyclopedia whose passion for native plants is contagious!

Topic: "How to Build a Pond" 
Guest speaker: Jake Hudson, Vandermeer Nursery

Speaker’s biography: Jake Hudson is Vandermeer Nursery’s Water Garden Specialist. Jake studied Horticultural Science at Humber College and is currently in the Landscape Design program at Ryerson University. He has worked in the field for many years, and has a passion for new and creative ways to incorporate water into the garden.

2014 - September meeting — Thursday, September 18

Topic: "Trees & Caring for Structural Integrity" 
Guest speaker: John Vandenberg, Kobes Nursery

Speaker’s biography: Located on the north shores of Lake Ontario, 45 minutes east of Toronto, Kobes Nurseries has been providing garden centres and landscape professionals with high-quality plant material since 1963. Offering field-grown shade and flowering trees, specimen shrubs and evergreens, and container grown shrubs, evergreens, vines, perennials, and grasses, their emphasis continues to be on integrity, quality product, and overall customer satisfaction. John is the field production manager at Kobes; a couple of years ago, John gave a very informative and entertaining presentation on pruning.

2014 - October meeting — Thursday, October 16

Topic: "Gardening without Flowers: Fantastic Foliage & Garden Ornaments" 
Guest speaker: Paul Zammit, Toronto Botanical Gardens

To allow more time for socializing, there will not be a judged flower show.

Speaker’s biography: A graduate of the University of Guelph’s Plant Agriculture program, Paul is an active member of many Canadian and international gardening communities. In 2009, Paul was appointed the new Director of Horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden, retiring from his position as perennial manager and plant buyer at Plant World. A popular and engaging speaker, Paul has given presentations at many garden clubs and large garden shows such as the Canadian National Exhibition, Success With Gardening, and Canada Blooms, and other horticultural trade shows in both Canada and the United States. Paul has made several television appearances on HGTV’s “The Indoor Gardener” and Kathy Renwald’s shows, “Calling All Gardeners” and “Gardeners’ Journal.” Paul has written many articles and provided photographs for many publications. “Two Gardens Become One,” a story on the making of Paul and Uli’s garden, appeared in Gardening-How-To magazine, and several of Paul’s container arrangements have appeared in both Gardening Life and Canadian Gardening.

Topic: "Inspirations from Gardens Around the World" 
Guest speaker: Marjorie Mason, Mason House Gardens

Tonight, we kick off our year-long celebration of our 40th anniversary. Our social committee has been busy

planning a lovely evening. To allow more time for socializing, there will not be a judged flower show.

Speaker’s biography: Marjorie Mason is an enthusiastic gardener who enjoys sharing her ideas with others. She started gardening at a very early age on her parents' market garden farm near Peterborough. After a career as a public school teacher, she worked for 19 years at Pine Ridge Garden Gallery in Pickering where she amassed a collection of over 500 different varieties of Pelargoniums. During the winter of 1987, Marjorie purchased a property south of Uxbridge. This two acre property is now MasonHouse Gardens—a retail plant centre and display garden. Plants are the main focus with collections of perennials, shrubs, bulbs, and heather, as well as annuals, and tropicals, and an ornamental vegetable garden. Marjorie also has a passion for gardening in containers. Marjorie lectures across Canada and the U.S. on a wide variety of topics. She is also a published author and hosts “Let’s Get Growing” every Saturday morning from 9-10 a.m. on 1580 CKDO and 107.7 FM. Marjorie has travelled extensively, hosting garden tours since 1985.

Topic: "Growing & Preparing for Showing" 
Guest speaker: Christine Male

Speaker’s biography: Christine is a retired horticulturalist from Sheridan Nurseries. She has a real passion for perennials and clematis. Christine has been judging flower shows for horticultural societies and fall fairs for 15 years.

Topic: "Landscaping for a Shady Spot" 
Guest speaker: Lynette Kirton from Vandermeer Nursery

Speaker’s biography: Lynette has been with Vandermeer Nursery for over 21 years and is currently a Horticultural Specialist. Lynette has been in the industry for over 41 years and worked in different aspects of the industry, so is uniquely qualified to give advice on any aspect of gardening, including landscape design.
