Glimmer Memorial Gardens
Years Ago, the small park located on Queen Street across from the Tottenham Community Centre was adopted by the Tottenham & District Horticultural Society as part of the Adopt –A- Park Program. Glimmer Memorial Gardens was dedicated on May 31, 1998 in memory of Jytte Merkly a former Tottenham Post Mistress, Master Gardener and long time active member of the Society. The name “Glimmer” was formed from part of her maiden and married surnames from the suggestion of her husband Dave. Within the Garden there have been many subsequent memorial plantings for the society members and their families.
As a Society we have been fundraising for the past few years to make Glimmer Memorial Gardens attractive and inviting place to spend time. Indeed, Maria Zabehlicky of Strays Landscaping drew up a plan in 2004, it was a very ambitious plan and since at the time we did not have the necessary funds we tabled it for a while.
Now we are happy to say that Glimmer is getting a face lift. Using Maria’s plan as a base, a local builder RCI (Rumber Construction) has simplified them and added hardscaping in the form of a Gazebo, with the approval and some assistance by the New Tecumseth Parks and Recreations Department during the month of June many changes will be occurring in the garden.
On July 5th 2009 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon as part if Tottenham Community week celebrating its 125th Year which we have dedicated at tree in Glimmer to commemorate, we will unveil the new Glimmer Memorial Gardens and dedicated the Gazebo.
