The St.Thomas & District Horticultural Society's Annual Rose and Flower Show attracted 214 entries on June 25th at Monsignor Morrison Catholic School. The number of entries was down due to the cool, wet weather and early heat. This year's theme 'Enchantment' was inspired by mythic tales.
Ruth Kristoff of Aylmer was the winner of the Red Rose Tea Trophy for Best Red Tea Rose. Ruth and Fred Kristoff have been winners since the Elgin County Centennial Flower Show was held in St.Thomas in August of 1952. The Fergus Cron Trophy for best rose in show was won by Bob Reynaert of Aylmer with a yellow Large-Flowered Rose. Roland Craig received the Dr. Frank E. Bennett Memorial Trophy for best modern shrub, climber, rambler or Old Garden Rose with 'Hope For Humanity' (Collicutt, 1998). The Shirley Robinson Memorial Trophy for best miniature rose went to Sarah Kelly for 'Black Jade' (Benardella, 1985). The Wm. Saunders Rose Society Award for novice went to Ellenita Bell for the David Austin Rose 'Golden Celebration' (Austin, 1992).
The Leta M. Smith Trophy for best horticultural exhibit went to Sandra Wilson for her Clematis 'Blue Bird' (Skinner, 1962). The Gladys Harris Memorial Plaque went to Sharon Shortt for most points in houseplants. Ms.Kelly received the Canadale Nurseries Ltd. Award for most points in the horticultural division.
In floral design, the Judge’s Choice Award (Reg Luxton Trophy) went to Eleanor Huber for her arrangement in the class, 'Water Nymphs' (underwater). The Fellows-Fernlea Flowers Certificate (most points in design) was awarded to Loni Earhart. The People’s Choice Award went to Ms.Huber for her underwater flower arrangement. The Frances Ahara Trophy (most points in show) went to Ms.Earhart.
