About Us

Welcome to the Thorndale and Area Horticultural Soceity website.  Our society was established in 1996 and our floral emblem is a woodland violet.   Thorndale and area is a thriving community which along with the village includes many farms, rivers, creeks and woodlots making the woodland violet an excellent symbol to represent who we are.  The Thorndale and Area Horticultural Society is a member of the Ontario Horticultural Association, District 10.

The Thorndale and Area Horticultural Society has approximately 70 members.  We plant and care for several public gardens, through the volunteer efforts of our members.    Our members volunteer over 1500 hours during the year.  We are active with several other committees within our community and this enables the society to assist with gardening advice.  The  committees that we are involved in include:  Thorndale Revitaliztion Project, Tree Planting and the Thorndale Library.  Additionally, like many other societies we are also very active with the Communities in Bloom project.

We meet the second  Wednesday of every month excepting January and July.  The goals for our meetings are to be informative, have fun and to encourage participation.  We strive to ensure our new members are welcomed.  Each new member receives a “Welcome Package” containing  a welcoming letter, an information sheet about our society, a newsletter, a volunteer time tracking sheet and other informative documents.  Visitors are always welcomed at our meetings.  Our meetings conclude with a light lunch and a pleasant social time is had by all.

We raise money by having a spring plant sale, a garden walk, and selling engraved stepping stones.  The plant sale and garden walk are both open to the public.  To order an engraved stepping stone please see our program, "Engraved Stepping Stones".  We are activity involved in the Thorndale Fair where we have a float and a booth.  The float and booth are designed and staffed by members of our society.  We are very proud of the many ribbons our floats have won.  Our booth encourages people to stop, ask gardening questions and find out information about our society.  Having a booth at our local fair is a great source of new members.  We would encourage all Horticultural societies to have a booth at their local fairs.

The local businesses are very supportive of the our society and show their support in many ways.  These include financial support,  donations of plants and store discounts to our members.  They also support us by posting our flyers for upcoming events. and putting our newsletters out for customers.
