A BRIEF HISTORY (Updated February 2009)

On December 8, 2004 following a community call for interested gardeners, a group of residents met and organized THE SPANISH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

On April 27, 2005 our application for incorporation with the Ontario Horticultural Association was accepted and the Goals and Objectives of the Ontario Horticultural Association were adopted. Shortly thereafter a working group developed a constitution which was adopted by The Spanish Horticultural Society.

All Society Members in good standing (dues paid each year-on or before December 1st) are automatically Members of the Ontario Horticultural Association. Associate Members of the Ontario Horticultural Association are divided into Districts within Ontario. The Spanish Horticultural Society is one of fourteen Society Members of District #13. The District #13 represents Societies within a hugh area from French River-Sudbury-along the North Shore to Sault Ste. Marie and the whole of the Manitoulin Island

Representation from each Society within District #13 meet twice a year as an Advisory Group providing input and feedback regarding activities and functions of each Society, The Ontario Horticultural Association as well as information sessions with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs.

Although each Society and District is unique in its individual activities, all the Societies operate under the specific Goals and Objectives of the Ontario Horticultural Association.

The Spanish Horticultural Society conducts Executive and General Meetings on the First Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. respectively. Executive & General Meetings are held at The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 576-5 Brennan Harbour Rd-Spanish.

The Executive (President, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Vice-Presidents) are nominated and elected (two year term) at the Annual General Meeting. A Secretary, Treasurer and Committee Chairs are appointed by the Executive. The Executive takes on the day-to-day workings of the Society with the assistance of the Membership on a when-needed or advisory basis.

Membership to The Spanish Horticultural Society is $5.00 per year. Our operating year runs from December 1 - November 30.

The Spanish Horticultural Society has a Membership Registry which categorizes each member into: 1. Potential Executive/Director Members  (these are Members who may hold office in the local Society and reside in the Spanish catchment area) 2.Associate Members (those who reside outside the catchment area & support our goals & objectives. 3.Complimentary Members (those who the Executive feel have and will contribute to the growth and development of the Society) 4.Junior Members-18 years and under (those who are not able to vote, agree with our goals and objectives and will be our gardeners/organizers of future growth and development) 5. Lifetime Members (those chosen by the Executive as individuals who have contributed in special ways to the birth and longevity of Society goals and objectives)

All Members in good standing over the age of 18 have voting privileges. Our Membership started with 22 founding members in 2004, grew to 53 members in 2005, 83 members in 2006, 149 members in 2007, and 149 in 2007, and 164 members in 2008.

We have Committee appointed Chairpersons as well as a Secretary and Treasurer reporting at each Executive/General Meeting. Our key programs consist of a Guest Speaker Program at General Meetings, Recycling Program, Volunteer Public/Private Gardening Program, Partnership of Student Bursary Fund Program, Partnership Sponsor of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 576 Bilingual Public Speaking Program, Annual Flower-Garden Show and Exhibit Program, Annual Awards Night Program recognizing gardeners and volunteers through Society and Memorial Awards, as well as the Newsletter Committee which we feel is the backbone of our Society keeping Members in touch.

"From our start in 2004-it continues to be our intention to involve and encourage as many Members of our Society in our activities (small or large) for the sole purpose of their own and our growth and development in a comfortable and relaxed environment respecting the goals and objectives of the ONTARIO HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION  established in 1906"
