 SEPTEMBER 10, 2011

HOSTED BY THE SMITHS FALLS HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Centennial Park, Smiths Falls, Ontario

(under the water tower)

Show co-ordinator:   Lorna Stewart

Show chair:   Kathleen Lang

District 2 Flower & Vegetable Show is to be held in Smiths Falls, Ontario in conjunction with the Pickle Fest celebrations.   Show tent opens at 8:30 am and all entries are to be labeled and in place by 11:00 am.   Entry tags will be available at the Show.   There will be  stewards in attendance to help, if you are in doubt about placement of entries.    Entries will not be accepted after 11 am.   Judging will commence promptly at 11:15 am.   Show open for viewing by entrants and the general public by 12:30 pm.   All entries are to stay in place until at least 3:30 pm.

There is also a separate pickle contest;  classes include -  Dill Pickle, no garlic; Dill Pickle, with garlic; Sweet Pickle,  Fruit Jelly,  and Vegetable Jelly.   Members are welcome to bring an entry for those contests too.  Entries are to be on the Pickle Table by 11 am.

Also, not to be missed, is the Salsa Tent where there will be a whole lotta salsa to sample.

District 2 Show Rules

Any member in good standing of any society in District 2 may exhibit with proof of membership. Only one person per family may exhibit in any class, with the exception of the Design classes. If you belong to more than one Society, you must decide which Society you will represent and mark your tags accordingly. Entry tags will be available at the Show.    More than one horticultural entry per class per person is permitted, provided that the entries are of different cultivars.

For the Horticultural Division, all entries MUST have been grown by the exhibitor.  Exhibitors are to provide their own clear, uncoloured, glass containers for cut specimens and plain white paper or styrofoam plates for edibles, unless otherwise stated.  Potted entries should be shown in the containers in which they are growing with a saucer underneath (i.e. no cache pots).  For trailing plants, a clean, upturned pot may be used under the exhibit to raise it up. Education is one of the aims of this show, therefore kind, cultivar and botanical names should be written on entry tags, if known. In the event of a tie, the named entry will win. For the purposes of this show:

Kind - refers to different types of plants, e.g. pepper, corn, tomato. It does not apply to cultivar or variety.

Cultivar - refers to different cultivated forms (or varieties) of the same species, e.g. Petunia ‘Happiness’, Petunia ‘Calypso’, and Petunia ‘Satin Lace’ are three cultivars.

Annual – A plant that completes its life cycle from seed to seed within one growing year.

Perennial – refers to a plant that lives for more than two years, eg. Peony, Cone Flower, etc.

For the Design Division, plant material may be obtained from any source unless stated otherwise, as it is the artistic ability of the exhibitor that is being judged. Accessories, decorative wood, dried and/or treated material are permitted in all designs unless otherwise specified.  Please, no cut fruit.  To assist in staging, it would be appreciated if exhibitors would pre-register with the Show committee by September 1st. Entries for each of the decorative classes will be limited to six.                Please register with: Kathleen Lang, 73 Ogilvie Lane, RR2, Jasper, ON K0G 1G0  tel: 613 283-5982  email: kathray@ripnet.com by September 1, 2011.

Due care will be taken with the exhibitor’s property, but the District will not be responsible for any loss or damage.

Judging will follow the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards (OJES) for Horticulture and Floral Design (Reprint/2007). Please use it as a reference when preparing your exhibits. The decision of the judge is final. No exhibit will be awarded a prize unless the judge considers it to have sufficient merit, even if it is the only entry in the class.

Prizes

  1. Prize ribbons  and cash awards will be given for first second and third place in each class if merited. Additional ribbons may be given at the Judge’s discretion if there are more than ten entries in a class and the Show chair has decided not to split the class. Prize ribbons and cash awards will be given for first, second and third place in the Junior classes.
  2. The exhibitor selected in a Best in Show class will receive a rosette plus a monetary prize.
  3. The exhibitor with the highest point aggregate in Horticultural Division Section will receive a monetary  prize. Points towards aggregate scores will be awarded as five for first, three for second and one for third place in any class and five points for a best in show. Aggregate prizes will be awarded only to an exhibitor who has obtained eleven points or more with at least three entries in the Section. In the event of a tie, the exhibitor scoring the most first-place awards will be judged the winner.
