About the Petawawa Horticultural Society
Member of the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) since 1997
The Petawawa Horticultural Society (PHS) is organized under the authority of the Agricultural and Horticultural Societies Act (Bill 66 - 1986). It is affiliated with the Ontario Horticultural Association (OHA) and is one of twenty-two societies which make up District 2. Funding is granted by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and is based on membership. The PHS gratefully acknowledges this support.
The Petawawa Society is an organization of interested volunteers who are dedicated to the good of their community. They meet once a month for approximately two hours and add to their own knowledge through guest speakers, society members, group discussions and workshops. A question and answer forum, coffee break, "friendly competitions" and a door prize draw round out the evening.
Meetings are held the second Monday of each month (excluding July and August) at 7:00 p.m. in the Fundraising Lounge (upstairs) at the Petawawa Civic Centre (map).
Membership fees
Membership fees (paid for the calendar year) are as follows:
- Single of Corporate Membership $10.00
- Family Membership $12.00

If you would be happy all your life, plant a garden. - Chinese Proverb
Community Gardens
The Society maintains fifteen garden plots 30' x 30'. However, half plots, 15' x 30' are also available. The plots are located behind the Petawawa Civic Centre and have access to water. The Society has sufficient hose, complete with mobile hose-cart - and a nozzle, to water any plot. Plots are cultivated and ready for planting early each year. Compost and other nutrients are often included without additional charge. Last year we had a large load of compost, free and ready for use. The cost of the plots is $15.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members, for either size plot.
You would really be pleasantly surprised at just what you can grow on a 30' x 30' plot or even a plot half that size! These plots have been in use for a number of years and consequently have become very fertile and relatively weed-free. If you don't have the space at home - and would like to have a garden - why not give it a try.
We, personally, have had a plot from Day 1. We have grown far more than a family of two could ever consume and as a result we have shared the produce with family, friends and local seniors. Beans, in particular, have done well and we've harvested bushels of them. Do you find that hard to believe? Drop over and have a look! There is good natured rivalry amongst the gardeners but we do share our expertise thereby becoming more knowledgeable each new gardening season.
So, if you would like a plot - or if you know of anyone who might be interested - please let us know. The plots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Give it a try, reserve one now.
Contact the Society and we'd be only too pleased to answer any queries.
Gordon Strathy, Coordinator
Never plant any plant deeper than it was in the nursery. Top roots should be covered with no more than 2" of soil plus 1 W' of mulch. The desired level, under normal soil conditions, should always be 2" higher than the surrounding area since the plant and soil will settle. Newly planted nursery stock (including items transplanted the previous fall) needs extra attention during the first growing season.
One warm spell does not make Spring! Don't uncover any plant on a sunny day (danger of sun-scald!) but rather, uncover on a cloudy day towards evening.
Trillium Competition
Each year we sponsor a competition that is open to residents of the Town of Petawawa, who, through extra effort, have made the tront yard of their home, through the use of flowers, trees, shrubs, etc. a source of pride, not only to themselves - but to their neighbourhood. The gardens are rated on a scale of 1 to lOusing prescribed criteria. Neither nominators nor nominees need be members of our Society. They must, however, have carried out the work themselves. (Commercially designed or installed landscaping is ineligible.) This award may be won only once by any individual.
If, after reading the following criteria, you know of a tront yard you feel is worthy of an award pick up a nomination form and mail it to the convener of the competition.
