2008 Horticultural Calendar of Events Meetings and plant sales/auctions take place at the Elks Hall, corner of York & Elks Street, Picton

Wed. January 30/08 7:30 pm Susan Meisner and Tom Brown, owners of Spindle Tree Gardens near Tamworth, Ont., talk about their years of designing and developing this series of pleasure gardens featuring the pond with waterfall, the arched iron bridge, the crochet pavilion, walled kitchen garden and the Green Teapot Cafe.

Wed. Feb. 27/08 7:30 pm Marjie Olmstead, seminar leader for Waste Management and the Recycling Board, introduces us to Vermicomposting, ‘working with Red Wigglers’, using them and teaching others the value of letting the ‘reds’ eat through our kitchen garbage.

Wed. Mar. 26/08 7:30 pm ‘Delphiniums To Die For’; a colourful presentation by Joe, Hazel and Amy Cook of Blossom Hill Nursery, just north of Peterborough, who specialize in growing beautiful, very hardy British delphiniums.

Wed. April 30/08 6 pm Spring Plant Auction of members’ plants, auctioneer Creighton Carr 8 pm Dawn Tack, of Gardens Plus, near Peterborough, which features award winning display gardens of hostas and daylilies, greenhouses and mail order will show us how easy it is to add colour and texture to shade and part shade areas using low maintenance perennials.

Wed. May 28/08 7:30 pm Marjorie Mason, popular garden lecturer across Canada and the US, and writer of articles for numerous garden magazines will entertain and inform us on the topic of ‘xeriscaping’, which she learned the hard way in her Uxbridge garden consisting of mainly pure sand with a shallow well.

Saturday, June 7 Picton Curling Rink 10 am to 3 pm PEC Horticultural Society Gardeners’ Gala featuring Flower Show, Plant Auction by Auctioneer Creighton Carr, Master Gardener Plant Sale, Celebrity Speaker Mary Elizabeth Poirier on ‘Growing and Cooking with Garlic’, Victorian Tearoom.

Wed. Sept.24 6pm Fall Plant Sale 7:30 pm ******SpeakerTBA****** Second Annual Fall Rose Show judged by Marvin Chapman, Flowers by Marvin

Wed. Oct.29 7:30 pm ‘Hot New Hostas’, presented by award winning local County daylily hybridizer Barry Matthie and his wife Margaret, owners of Bonnie Brae Daylilies which now also features hundreds of the latest hosta varieties in stunning display gardens.

Wed. November 26, 6pm Annual General Meeting and potluck dinner ‘Members’ Night’ presentations
