Great Front Gardens Contest 2017


North York Great Front Gardens Contest, a competition to recognize the great front gardens of North York co-sponsored by Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation and the North York Garden Club.The awards recognize outstanding front gardens in North York that contribute to the beautification of our city. The nomination submission deadline is JUNE 20, 2017. Gardeners who make our neighbourhoods look beautiful deserve to be recognized.


Garden Catogories are:

1. Residential Traditional - a garden with a lawn

2. Residential Environmental/Alternative - a garden with little or no lawn

3. Multi-Residential - Condo or Townhouse Complexes or apartment buildings

4. Non-Residential - schools, places of worship, business, hospitals etc.


 Must be in the area bounded by the following streets to be eligible for nomination.

  • Hwy 401 on the south
  • Steeles Avenue on the north
  • Allen Road/Dufferin Street on the west
  • Victoria Park Avenue on the east

Who May Nominate a Garden

You can nominate your own garden or anyone else's garden. You do not need to be a North York resident to nominate a garden.


How to Nominate a Garden or Gardens

Take a tour of your neighbourhood and locate the most beautiful front garden. Nominate by e-mailing us the address, tell us which category the garden (see above 1, 2,3 or 4)  and the nearest major intersection. 


What do the Judges Look for When Judging

Design - Balance, originality, Good selection and arrangement of plants, trees, and shrubs, design of traffic flow


Hard Landscaping - Use of driveway paving and walkways, use of stones, rocks, statuary, containers, walls, fencing and water features


Conditions & Maintenance - Cleanliness of garden and area, free from disease and weeds, good garden practices, suitable ground cover


Use of Plant Material - variety, spacing and balance, use of colour and texture, appropriate use of perennials and /or native species.
