Minden is located in the Haliburton Highlands in Central Ontario. The area is hilly hardwood forests surrounding medium-sized lakes on the Canadian Shield. The Gull River runs through the Town.
Founded in 1977, we are an active society. Usually we have about100 members. Our members plant and maintain flower beds along the riverbank, barrels and planters on Main Street and heritage gardens at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre.
Working with the Grade 3 classes of our local elementary school, each spring, we plant a Three Sisters Garden at the Minden Museum and take care of the flower beds. (see About Us/Programs/Youth Programme)
Members on our board (see About Us/Board of Directors) usually attend the district meetings and the Annual Ontario Horticultural Association Convention. Our monthly meetings feature a speaker (see About Us/ Programs) and a popular social lunch afterwards.
Besides our monthly meeting speakers, our biggest event of the year is our Annual Flower Show. A Spring Plant Sale is held. Usually two workshops are provided for the benefit of our members. We annually have at least one bus trip. Often our members represent our Society at local events such as Victorian Croquet, Chili Cook-off or decorating the Artisans’ Festival.
Master Gardeners from the Haliburton County Master Gardener group attend every meeting and our own members assist in answering questions regarding growing in Zone 4 with thin soil, late & early frosts and pesky deer.
