The true character of people never shows until we get to know them or a need arises. In 1989 and 1990 a few residents of Grand Bend thought the town needed a face-lift by adding some color. This was accomplished by adding some badly needed flower and planting beds. The council of the day gave them little support. This energetic group of people advertised in the local paper to cut lawns, raked leafs, work in yards and gardens, cleaning up and pruning trees for private homeowners in the Grand Bend area. Money raised from their hard work along with the $500.00 received from the town was spent on installing and planting gardens at the Canadian Legion and Municipal Office. Grand Bend Horticultural Society was on its way. The Grand Bend and Area Horticultural Society was not officially ratified until 1991. The primary undertaking is civic beautification of their town. Their purpose is to provide a forum for education and gardening and to hold completions and exhibitions in flower arranging and horticulture. The Horticultural Society plants and maintains [watering and weeding that never ends] the following beds: Service Club Sign at the north end of town. Planter tub in front of Bank of Montreal Canadian Legion Municipal Office 2 planters at the north end of the bridge Centennial Park bed Chamber of Commerce Office The Post Office 20 planters at Optimist Children’s Park 1 Planter Boxes at Crescent Street and Gill Road Flowerbed at Grand Bend Optometry Community Health Center Lighthouse Signs on Hwy#81 and 21 south River Bend Park on River Road 28 Hanging Baskets at various locations in town Planter at the Fire hall Old Medical Center. Our Volunteers worked over 6000 hours last year to keep everything working. With all these venues in town, the Grand Bend and area Horticultural Society makes their presence known and we do get lots of comments concerning how much people enjoy them. The Horticultural Society holds social and educational meetings on the last Monday of each month. Guest speakers are invited to help with planting problems and to give new ideas to plan your gardens. You do not have to a member to attend, everyone is welcome. We organize bus trips to different locations, host garden walks, plant sales and home and garden tour. If you have any suggestions to offer or a program that you feel that would enhance our community, please contact David Boyle at tristan1@ezlink.on.ca or P.O. Box 706, Grand Bend,Ontario,N0M1T0
