Where is Grand Bend and what's in a name

Grand Bend is named after the tight turn or grand bend in the original Ausable River.

Grand Bend is small town located on the east shore of Lake Huron in the municipality of Lambton Shores.

Logging and fishing brought English and Scottish settlers here in 1830. About 1846 a group of French people migrated to this area from Quebec Province. They had heard of this area from coureurs de bois and, after suffering two crop failures on their home farms decided to move.

In 1892 Grand Bend decided that it needed a harbor. So a canal was dug from the grand bend in the river to the lake. As a result, you do not see the grand bend in the river today in Grand Bend.

Grand Bend is renowned for its sunsets, beaches and summer fun, but is now becoming home to a growing number of year-round residents of over 2000. The population in the summer however grows to over 50,000 people. The demographic population of Grand Bend is diverse. Families that own vacation homes in adjacent communities are mostly from Ontario and Michigan.
