ABOUT
Elmira and District Horticulture Society was founded in 1900 and at that time the local newspaper expressed concern that the community might not support a Horticulture Society. After 106 years and a membership of 200, the society has done well.
The Society Members plant and maintain flowerbeds at the Woolwich Community Services, Gibson Park, Memorial Park, South Welcome Sign, North Welcome Sign, Union Cemetery, Lions Park, Woolwich Visitors Centre, Floradale Beds and Planters, Bristow Park Garden and Breslau Gardens and we also subsidize the Hanging Baskets down town.
The Society also holds educational meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month. Guest speakers are invited, to help with your planting problems, and to give new ideas to help plan your gardens. Everyone is welcome.
We also have bus trips to different areas, to check out other gardens. A plant sale is held every spring, bring in any two plants the night before at set up, and receive a coupon for a plant on sale day. This is a great way to purchase plants at reasonable prices. Garden walks are another fundraiser, where you can tour a variety of delightful gardens in our community. Every other year we have a candlelight tour where one can enjoy homes that are decorated for the Christmas season.
As you can see the society has a lot to offer but if you have any suggestions to offer or any programs that you feel that would improve the community, or have any questions about gardening, please let us know by contacting Anne & Tony Vorstenbosch at 519 669 8802 or you can e-mail us at atvorst@hotmail.com.
