Spring Gardening Classes

The Thunder Bay & District Master Gardeners in partnership with Confederation College are offering the following new spring gardening classes:

 

 

 

 

 

ZD0f0 Find Your Green Thumb

Saturday, March 27th 9am – 1 pm

Tuition:  $42.00

 

This is a 3-session workshop for the novice to experienced gardener.  Spend the morning with the Master Gardeners, then get growing!

Session 1 – Garden Basics

Maximize your space; analyze your site for sun, wind, soil and much more.

Session 2 – Spring Tasks

Mulch removal, perennial divisions and other essential spring chores

Session 3 – Growing from Seeds

Learn about the practical, but fun reason for starting your own seeds, then learn in a hands-on demonstration how to start some of the seeds donated by the Master Gardeners.  Take them home and watch them grow!

 

ZD051 What’s Bugging You?

Tuesday, April 27th 7 – 9 pm

Tuition:  $29.40

 

This session will examine common insects and diseases in the northern garden.  We will discuss the basics of the Ontario Pesticide Bay affecting the use of chemicals and its impact on the home gardener.  Find out about alternative remedies and new organic approaches to pest and disease control.  Are they effective?  The Pest and Disease booklet prepared by the Thunder Bay District Master Gardeners will be available for sale at this class.

 

ZD052 New Plants and Pretty Camps

Tuesday, May 4th 7 – 9 pm

Tuition:  $29.40

 

What’s hot and what’s not for the 2010 growing season?  The first hour of this session will feature an interactive display and discussion of new plants from Thunder Bay greenhouses.  Come and learn how to grow these plants successfully.  The second hour we will focus on “Prettying up your Camp”  where you will learn about drought tolerant plants, xeriscaping (design of land for minimizing the need for water use) and ways to look after your gardens when you are not there.  See the possibilities.  Get inspired.

 

ZD053 Herbs and Containers Veggies

Tuesday, June 3td 7 – 9 pm

Tuition $29.40

 

Love a leafy salad but have no room for a vegetable plot?  Find out how you can successfully grow vegetables in containers.  In the first hour we will discuss container size, using plant starts and the vegetables that are best suited to container cultivation.  In the second hour we will tell you how to grow and store herbs from an herb expert.  This session will discuss the wide range of herbs that can be grown in out region.  Growing requirements, using your herbs and techniques for over-wintering plants will be discussed.
