District 2 Newsletter, Fall 2007
by Sheila King

Fall Newsletter

Summer is fading in my garden, except for a few late bloomers, chrysanthemums grown from small plants purchased at Gloucester H.S. Spring show and a great show of Dahlias that were bulbs "thrown out" at my garden center, “where there is dirt there is hope.”

Congratulations to Perth and their five friendly neighbor Horticultural Societies who banded together to put on a great District Show this Summer.  Overall point trophy was won by Margaret Inwood and the Junior trophy went to the same Nepean granddaughter as last year! Well done.

Many Congratulations to our Junior Gardeners showing their gardens in the District Competition, with thanks to Junior Judge Jocelyn Laframboise

OHA 2007 Convention Notes

I have visited several Horticultural Societies to tell some stories of the last Convention in Owen Sound, memories include very large purple/blue Rose of Sharon bushes, giant teasels growing along the Bruce trail along with so many wild flowers. Lake Huron was showing its true turquoise color along Wasaga beach.

The White fish fry at the convention was truly the best fried fish I have ever tasted and that coming from a Brit. The weather was great and along with the scenery, speakers of top caliber, well laid out  exhibitions and competitions and the fantastic Hosts, I have nothing but praise for the organizers. One must remember that yours truly also spent about ten hours at the board table in meetings.

I encourage all District 2 Society members to consider the next Convention to be held at Sheridan College in Brampton on August 22nd, 23rd and 24th.

There is some very affordable accommodation at the College residence.

See OHA web site for all the details. This convention will have an exciting Youth Camp too.

After the OHA Board meeting in Barrie this weekend the show schedules should start to appear on the OHA web site  www.gardenontario.org

Fall Advisory

Back to our District...

The fall advisory meeting will be held on SUNDAY October 28th at Moncion’s Independent Grocery Store on River Road Half way between Hunt Club and Tim Horton’s in Manotick.  Moncion's is at 671 River Road  see map

All Presidents and Secretaries and of District 2 Societies are invited there you will hear up to date news from Barrie.

2008 District 2 AGM

Next Year’s District 2 AGM will be hosted by Stittsville Goulbourn and West Carleton Societies.

I have visited the venue and it is very well placed, just off the 417 Highway at the same level as Pakenham, great for coming from the west or the east.

Kinburn Community Center on Saturday April 26th

Looking for OHA Annual Reports

The district 2 pages of most OHA annual reports have been scanned and can be viewed at: http://www.gardenontario.org/site.php/district2/reports/archive

The annual reports often contain interesting historical information regarding the annual activities of Societies.  I would like to scan the reports I'm missing.  If you have the following OHA reports, could you bring them to our Fall advisory meeting?  I would like to photocopy the District 2 pages.
Missing reports: 2003,2001,1999,1992-1996,1989-1990,1980-1986,1978,1966
Thanks,
Jeff

Youth in your Society

Are you thinking of starting a Youth Group or improving, changing the one you have?

Great advice is available in your Society Manual.

Make sure your executive and especially your youth Leader reads the Youth Leader Manual in your Society Manual Binder, Section 9 - all 70 pages of it.

OHA Awards

It is also time to think about awards, information on this subject can be found in Section 8 of your Society Manual, I ask you to consider the following:-

Ontario Horticultural Association Awards

  • Section 1 - Service Certificate, Life Award, Society Presidents Award
  • Section 2 - Youth Garden Club, Youth Service Certificate, Youth Leader
  • Section 3 - District Service Award - Bring letter of recommendation to the Fall Advisory.
  • Section 4 - Award of Merit
  • Section 5 - OHA Honor Roll
  • Section 6 - Community Improvement Award, Environment Award

OHA Grants for Trees

Don’t forget trees and up to $500 grants for special projects are also available.

Three trees were granted to District 2 last year and Stittsville was awarded the $500 for their special project.

That’s all for now gardeners, bring your questions and ideas and enthusiasm  to the Fall advisory in a few weeks

Happy raking
