Annual Report

The societies of district 16 had successful plant sales and garden tours again in 2011. Some of the groups try new things for fundraising or social outings which when shared can provide ideas and encouragement for other societies.
The members give so much of themselves as shown with the high number of volunteer hours logged and we’re proud to help keep Ontario beautiful.

Alliston: 
• participated in the Alliston Potato Festival and New Tecumseth Home Show 
• new participation this year was the Pentecostal Church ‘Blossom Tea’ and Museum on the Boyne’s Canada Day Celebration 
• new garden project of designing & planting 3 flower beds at the Alliston & District Humane Society Shelter 
• received a Certificate of Appreciation for our participation with the Banting High School’s Horticulture & Landscape Program & Alliston’s Matthews House.

Angus: 
• purchased, planted and maintained large cement planters fro Peacekeeper’s Park and Cemetery 
• purchased and planted 6 flowering crab apple trees with funds raised from our ‘glow in the dark angels’ fundraiser 
•planted 150 daffodil bulbs at the Clock Tower gardens

Barrie: 
• our annual spring seminar featured herbs with a demonstration from a chef of a major Toronto chain
 • worked with Hospice Simcoe to design and install gardens; provided them with a 5- year plan and wish-list for future community donations
 • increased flower show participation

Beeton: 
• great speakers 
• maintained downtown park, gardens at entry signs and Beeton library

Bond Head: 
• continued to plant and tend gardens at Wilson Hill Pioneer Cemetery, parkette in Bond Head, the Scotch Settlement Arboretum and tended the gardens at the Danube Seniors Leisure Centre
 •collected donations for the Helping Hand Food Bank

Brentwood: 
• had a float in the winterama parade
 • joined with 2 neighbouring socities to host a June Strawberry social 
• assisting Clearview Township with changes to the Pioneer Cemetery 
• bursary given to a highschool student for education in horticulture or agriculture

Coldwater: • worked with BIA to renovate Rick Hansen Memorial Gardens
 • maintained Woon Memorial Garden, CHS Memorial Garden for past members • hosted district fall seminar

Collingwood: 
• reworked constitution
 • have a seasonal display in a Town Municipal building window • Victorian Garden Party

Creemore: 
• sold flowers in teacups for Mother’s Day and lilac whips for planting • made and sold Thanksgiving & Christmas arrangements
 • held a celebrity flower arranging contest

Elmvale: 
• held a mystery garden tour 
• Earthkeepers Youth Group created a boxwood hedge cross at school • bi-weekly articles in the local newspaper

Gilford: 
• many hours spent maintaining our arboretum 
• car-pooled to Peterborough Garden Show and local hosta business

Midland: 
• ‘Uncrate the Sun’ potluck dinner in winter, everyone in summer gear • co-ordinated civic improvement with Midland BIA
 • approached downtown businesses for memberships 
• offerd a free membership to the member who sells five memberships • workshops on photography and floral design

Orillia: 
• 5 each of benches and concrete plants installed with Orillia Public Works Dept. • distributed rain barrels for community gardens; one for food bank 
• provided funds for installation of an eco-friendly water fountain

Oro-Medonte: 
• handout provided at each open meeting with announcements and upcoming events • memorial trees planted for honorary directors that have passed away 
• assisted town with large projects 
• support youth garden clubs

Painswick: 
• participated in the new mayor’s first annual Family Fun Day by giving out marigold seedlings and helped children plant theirs in soil in cups provided • donated and planted a red oak at a new library branch

Pentanguishene: 
• hosted mini garden tours for members only • new constitution put in place

Stayner:
 • held hypertufa and grapevine workshops 
• took part in a cooperative venture to improve the community Fountain Park 
• encouraged the municipality to require builders of housing developments to install cisterns to conserve water

Tottenham: 
• held a society BBQ with games played 
• Music in Motion school group attended fall pot luck
