Watford/Warwich
2009 Report
We have 210 members in our club. Our society maintains three parks in the town of Watford; the bluebird parkette, sunken gardens and the memorial park. We also take care of the gardens at the bank of Montreal, the medical centre and at the library. Each spring we plant flowers in our 72 aggregate planters and we hang 32 hanging baskets on our main street. We have two old wagons that we also plant flowers in one in Warwick and one at the entrance of Watford. Every third Thursday we have a guest speaker or we do a workshop. We hold two perennial sales, we canvas the town for members and we also canvas the business' in our town for donations We sell turkey on the bun at Alvinston fair, have the Christmas house tours in November put a float in our local Santa Claus parade, have a Christmas potluck and enjoyed a bus trip to the Stratford garden show. We also have an appreciation bbq in the summer. Our council shows us great support by giving us a donation to help us pay for the flowers and this year we were lucky enough to receive some money to help us pay the rent for store on our main street in Watford. Our society has been looking for a place to hold our meetings and to store all of our belongings. Our new location was named the Watford Warwick Horticultural centre. It is the perfect place for our youth gardeners meeting place, and has become a great place for our members to socialize. We will be holding two yard sales at our centre one at the end of May. We have asked people to donate any kind of gardening item they have for our sale. In the winter we had a very successful yard sale selling only used Christmas decorations. Being on the main street has been a very good way of promoting our club. We are looking forward to another very successful year.
A new project for this year is a memorial walkway and arbor at memorial park. We are presently waiting for a trillium grant which will enable us to do this.
Two workshops – dried fruit topiary and a dried fruit wreath were donated for our prizes here today.
A good money-maker – we put together outdoor Christmas planters with greenery and sold them for $20.00 at our house tours.
