Kingsville Report 2009

Kingsville

2009 Report

Our membership has increased by 10% from last year to this year.

(79 members with 5 Lifetime Members).

It appears that our President, Marg Laman's flower design workshop and her choice of dynamicspeakers has brought many new faces to our meetings.

Marg's flower design workshops stimulate meeting attendance, teaches members how to arrange flowers professionally saves on the cost of door prizes and gives members a sense of pride and accomplishment in their abilities.

The Saturday before each meeting, Marg has a flower design workshop at her home. Those who attend, arrange flowers under Marg's expert tutelage and take their arrangements home to enjoy for the weekend. The arrangements are returned the night of the monthly meeting and are used for door prizes. Every workshop has a different theme and many visitors have returned to our meetings to become members and to win a floral arrangement door prize or learn from one of our guest speakers.

In the past year we have learned "How to Propagate African Violets', about the "Bearded Iris", "New and Upcoming Annuals", "Living Wreaths and Container Gardens", "Ponds", ""Lilies", "Flowers of Israel and Jordan" and "Putting the Garden to Bed" last fall. This June (back by popular demand) Terry Kennedy (American Orchid Society Judge) will once again delight the crowd with her orchid presentation.

We were successful in receiving funds from the Service Canada Summer Jobs Program for a Summer Student. Last year's student was a real worker who helped us create new gardens at Lakeside Park and the Federal ferry dock.

Our society designed and planted three new gardens around the Welcome to Kingsville signs and a huge garden at the Town of Kingsville's Planning Department building.

We still plant and maintain the 48 flower boxes and hanging baskets on the main streets of Town. As well as all of the gardens we were responsible for in past years, (e.g. the Parks, Town Hall, Library, Arena, O.P.P. station, I.O.D.E. beds & High School).

We staffed the Kingsville Tourist Information Booth and Partnered with the Welcome Wagon in welcoming newcomers to our community.

Our Society looks forward to another rewarding year in 2010.
