Greater Windsor Report 2009 by Brenda Lehoux
Greater Windsor Horticultural Society
2009 Report
Greater Windsor has 210 members and 7 life members. We meet every second Thursday of the month excepting July and August at St. Theresa Church on Norman Rd. Windsor.
Our newsletter goes out 5 times a year, some by mail and some by e-mail.
We start our meetings at 7:30 pm. and we have various speakers and presentations. The members especially liked Susan Ross’ presentation on veggies, and one of the other favourites was Marg. Dudley and her Bearded Iris presentation.
January is traditionally a “Show us your Pictures” meeting. Members bring in photos of their gardens from the previous growing season to share, all digitalized and viewed with the projector.
We had 5 flower shows in 2009 as suggested by members who felt that we were missing out on some of the blooms that come earlier than May in Windsor.
Our members donate used magazines and plants to sell at our green thumb table and of course our membership table is always open.
In May we planted a garden at the Unemployed Help Centre which has a community garden where residents of Windsor are given a 12’ x 12’ plot free of charge to grow vegetables on provided they “grow a row” for the food bank.
Our Society garden was 12’ x 36’ planted with tomatoes, broccoli, beans, zucchini and okra. All the produce from the garden was donated to the food bank.
May was the month of our plant sale as well. The weather was beautiful and we had a good turn out.
The garden tour was in June. One hundred and forty four maps we sold to tour the 9 gardens which were beautiful.
Once again we distributed cell packs of annuals to the seniors at the Campbell Avenue Windsor Housing.
Two of our board members attended the OHA Convention in Peterborough in July and came back with lots of ideas and information for our society.
We are maintaining the Baby House Museum garden, the Krista McNorton butterfly garden at the Children’s Safety Village and the native garden at St. John the Baptist school.
A $300 bursary was awarded by GWHS to a second year student enrolled in the horticulture program at St. Clair College and we donated prizes to regional winners of the Science fair who had projects related to horticulture.
Our year ended with a potluck Christmas dinner and awards banquet. Members brought in over 300 canned goods for the food bank and we were entertained by the Emerald Isle Dancers.
