In 1882 a group of local merchants came together to establish the Collingwood Horticultural Society in support of the Great Northern Exhibition fall fair. In 1911 the society was subsequently taken over by the Agricultural Society.
The CHS was revived in 1933 and continued to do its good work until World War II. In 1972 it was once again revived and has met regularly ever since. more....

The Collingwood Arboretum was once a landfill site, home to rubble, broken glass, and carpet remnants. The 5.5 acres on the shores of Georgian Bay was stockpiled with all kinds of household waste. And what a waste that was!!
In 1995 members of the Collingwood Horticultural Society had a vision to transform this landfill site into a place for quiet retreat, a place for learning about the importance of trees. With support from the Town of Collingwood and several generous donations from members and the community the vision became reality. The area was cleared of some of the rubbish and soil was brought in to top dress the area (3 feet of topsoil throughout). more....
