David Tomlinson invited BDHS members to visit his English flower garden, Merlin's Hollow at 181 Centre Crescent, Aurora, which is open annually, rain or shine on the following dates in 2011:
- May 14, 2011, the 2nd Saturday in May featuring spring bulbs, wild flowers & alpine scree;
- June 11, 2011, the 2nd Saturday in June featuring the fragrant garden thyme lawn, iris & peonies;
- July 2, 2011, the 1st Saturday in July featuring summer flowering perennials, pond & water garden and
- July 10, 2011, the Sunday of the following weekend.
The garden is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. free of charge. Plants from the garden are sold on the four open days only.
Merlin's Hollow was designed by David, a landscape architect, to create a series of gardens within a garden. The 3/4 acre garden was started in 1981 and contains over 1500 different plants of which many are labelled.
Enclosed by high cedar hedges, each garden has its own distinct character. A series of arches invites the visitor from one garden to the next. Features within the garden include woodland beds, a fern walk, alpine garden with scree beds, bog beds & frog pond. Stone walls enclose raised beds of scented flowers, herbs, heritage shrub roses and a thyme lawn. A winter garden & knot garden were added in 1998.
