POLLINATOR GARDENS August 2010 meeting report by Webmaster
At the BDHS General Meeting Wednesday, August 4, 2010, Clement Kent spoke about "Where the Wild Things Are - making a beautiful habitat for endangered species in your gardens and parks". Society members & guests learned about planting Pollinator gardens that provide nectar, pollen and food sources for native wildlife. The Horticulutral Societiy of Parkdale & Toronto have established 30 pollinator gardens in Toronto. Clement Kent showed slides of the progress from planting to maturity, inspiring those present to take a new look at the Bolton society's community gardens and to consider creating more habitat for native bees.
Clement Kent is a gardener, a biologist, and a big fan of birds, butterflies, and bees. As a biologist, he works with specialists who know that many of our native species are having a hard time coping with all the changes we've thrown at them - loss of habitat, poisoning by pesticides. Some are endangered - a few have even gone extinct. Each of us can make a difference by planting gardens of native plants.
