GENERAL RULES FOR DESIGN COMPETITION (Note: Additional rules 6 & 10b for Horticulture -see Horticulture page for details) 1. The show is open to members of the Ontario Horticultural Association and its affiliates, including the Garden Clubs of Ontario and Master Gardeners of Ontario. 2. Entry Dates/Times: All entries must be placed on Thursday, August 21, between 7-9 p.m., or on Friday, August 22, between 7 9 a.m. No late entries will be accepted without exception. 3. Judging a. Judging takes place on Friday, August 22 from 9:30 a.m. to noon after which the show will be open to the public at 1:00pm. b. The decision of the judges shall be final. Judges may withhold an award if in their opinion the exhibit is not worthy. c. Judging will be in accordance with the Ontario Judging and Exhibiting Standards for Horticulture and Design, 2003 edition. Please refer to it for definitions and information. 4. Removal All entries must be removed on Sunday, August 24 between noon and 2 p.m. 5. Entries General a. All entries must have an entry tag, giving necessary information regarding Class, Entry, and Entrant. Entry tags will be supplied by the Association. b. Exhibitors must provide their own containers, except where noted in the schedule. c. All exhibits must be kept in show condition for the duration of the show. An exhibit may be refreshed by the exhibitor and must retain its original form. This may only be done during the shows non-public hours. d. Reasonable security will be supplied for exhibitors property, however the Ontario Horticultural Association assumes no responsibility for loss or damage. e. Moving entries other than your own is not permitted. The designer is the only person able to move or shift the position of the design. The show committee reserves the right to move horticultural entries where necessary to accommodate exhibitors or to subdivide in any class. 7. Entries Design a. Exhibitors are required to pre-register by June 30, 2008 and to notify the Convenor of the Design Class in which they wish to enter as soon as possible. There will be a limited number of entries in each class as noted in the schedule. Space will be reserved for each exhibit upon registration by the exhibitor. Any exhibitor who finds it necessary to withdraw must find their own substitute and advise the Class Convenor by August 11, 2008. b. Class 13, First Nations, requires the exhibitor to interpret a piece of Native Art, which will be selected by the entrant in advance of the show. A CD with a pre-selected number of choices will be available in the New Year to interested participants. Selection will be on a first come first served basis. Only one entry will be permitted per image. An image of the piece of art will be displayed alongside the entry during the period of the show. c. Exhibitors may enter any number of Design classes, but may submit only one exhibit in each class. d. A specific space will be assigned to each exhibitor for his or her design by the Registrar. This space must not be changed by any entrant. No exhibitor may move another exhibit or impinge on another exhibitors allocated design space. e. All designs must be made and staged by the exhibitors themselves. Worktables will be available. f. All designs must be kept in show condition for the duration of the show. g. Accessories are permitted. h. Plant material must predominate over other components of the exhibit. No artificial plant material, no cut or sliced fruit, dairy products or perishable food is allowed. No soil is permitted in a floral design. No endangered plant species or coral are permitted to be used. i. Dried or preserved plant material and decorative wood may be used in their natural state or painted. No painting or dying of fresh plant material is allowed. j. For the Design Section, plant material may be from any source. 8. Definitions Layer Design - a design with the emphasis on strong horizontal lines, with parallel placements giving a layered effect. A Design with the Visible Use of Water this would include a water-viewing design or an underwater design. Functional Table design a show table on which the components are placed in a logical and utilitarian manner for the actual service of food. 9. NOVICE an exhibitor who has not won a first prize in a standard show. 10. Prizes and Awards a. O.H.A. (30) high table covered with a light sage green tablecloth. Space allotted: 91.5 cm. wide x 76 cm. deep X 91.5 cm. high (36 x 30 x 36). Class 5 Canadian Rockies. A design. Limit 5 entries. To be staged on a 76 cm. (30) high table covered with a light sage green tablecloth. Space allotted: 91.5 cm. wide x 76 cm. deep X 91.5 cm. high (36 x 30 x 36). Class 6 Orient Express. A design. Limit 6 entries. To be staged on a 76 cm. (30) high table covered with a light sage green tablecloth. Space allotted: 91.5cm. wide x 76 cm. deep X 91.5 cm. high (36 x 30 x 36). Class 7 Global Connections. A synergistic design using three or more containers. Limit 5 entries. To be staged on a 76 cm. (30) high table covered with a light sage green tablecloth. Space allotted: 91.5cm. wide x 76 cm. deep X 91.5 cm. high (36 x 30 x 36). Class 8 Spice Market. A design. NOVICE CLASS. See definitions Limit 5 entries. To be staged on a 76 cm. A functional table design that may include fruit(s), vegetables and/or flowers. Limit 5 entries. To be staged on a 76 cm. (30) high table covered with a white tablecloth. Space allotted: Table is 81.3 cm. deep x 132 cm. wide (32 x 52). To be viewed from the front along the 132 cm. (52) length. Class 11 Its a Small World After All. A small design, maximum 25.4 cm. (10) in any direction. Limit 9 entries. To be staged on a shelf covered with white paper. Class 12 Wee Friends. A miniature design, maximum 12.7 cm (5) in any direction. a. fresh materials only. Limit 12 entries. b. dried materials only. Limit 12 entries. To be staged on a shelf in a niche with a white background. Niches will be staggered 3x2x1 to make 4 groups of 6 niches. Special Design Class Class 13 First Nations. A design that interprets a piece of Native Art. Limit 6 entries. To be staged on a round pedestal 50.8 cm. (20) in diameter and 83.4 cm. (33) high. Pedestal surfaces will be painted a light grey colour. Space allotted: 122 cm. x 122 cm. (48 x 48). Height of design is optional.
