Living plants, Liveable Communities: Exploring Sustainable Horticulture for the 21st Century

A 3-day symposium on sustainable horticulture, designed for a wide audience: academics, landscape and horticulture practitioners, the nursery trades, the public, and other interested stakeholders. Themes being addressed include sustainability of horticultural practices, the roles of horticulture in improving community livability, innovations in design and practice, greening the built environment, gardens and biodiversity, water management, integrated pest management and others.

Winter Blooms is a miniature version of the well known Canada Blooms event. Speakers such as HGTV’s Denis Flanagan and Martin Quinn (Park Superintendent for the Town of Goderich, Perry Molema from Aquascape Ontario and many others will provide a professional speakers platform while others may enjoy the many pruning, floral and cooking demonstrations occurring throughout the day. The college interior is transformed with many delightful “Green for Life” themed gardens. Garden space showing various enviro and energy efficient themes as well as seasonal gardens will be demonstrate some of the latest technologies of green roof, living walls, water harvesting techniques. Retail items, silent auction items, raffles, children’s activities, orchid display and a food court built in the gardens are all components of Winter Blooms. Tickets are $12.00 in advance, $15.00 at the door.

The Heart of Northumberland’s 10th anniversary Garden Tour in support of Northumberland Big Sisters Big Brothers promises to be spectacular with eight expansive properties set in the Ganaraska watershed and the rolling Northumberland hills. These beautiful gardens have many wonderful natural assets, such as stately trees, rocks and water – fundamental aspects of the Canadian landscape. Again the birdhouse boutique will be open for business featuring handcrafted and handpainted birdhouses by local artists. Tickets $25
